Nourish – A fresh exhibition about Kumara

The sweetest vegetable in New Zealand, most of which is grown within 25km of the Kauri Museum, is the focus of a new exhibition at Northland’s largest undercover attraction. More than a natural history experience of the kauri, Kauri Museum presents Nourish, a new-season exhibition for Savour Northland celebrating the significance of sweet potato kumara to our people and its rich history in Northland.
Discover how this incredibly nutritious and versatile staple is brought to our tables by packhouses across the region, and how passionate, hard-working Northland producers and staff create quality produce. Precious taonga including Māori gardening tools and unique, heritage, handwritten recipe books from Northland whanau will be on short term display. Māori hold kumara in high regard, often linked to Rongomātāne the ātua (God) of cultivated plants – primarily kumara, and of peace, and is tangible evidence of whakapapa (ancestors’) journeys and resourcefulness. Having brought kumara here from warmer climates in the Pacific and South America, it has been adapted to suit conditions in Aotearoa and thrives in the alluvial soils of Ruawai, Dargaville and the Northern Wairoa River delta. Explore how this humble vegetable is a much-loved ingredient in the recipe of Northland’s identity and how Northlanders take pride in growing the high demand and delicious kumara. How sweet it is to satisfy your senses with this new exhibition of this humble, mighty vegetable!
Let your cravings take you to the popular museum Gumdiggers Café, where you’ll meet friendly Northland locals serving superb and exclusive Kauri Blend coffee and delicious food including a unique Kauri-spiced Kumara Pie.
