Northland Kai Curiosity Trail

Oct 1, 2025 @ 9:00 am - Oct 31, 2025 @ 5:00 pm

Northland’s sub-tropical climate, rich soils and abundance of kai moana – seafood, create a flourishing food bowl unique in Aotearoa. Discover how Northland’s early European families prospered, adapting to the environment of their new home; and how tools and food culture travelled with them from lands afar.

The Northland Kai Curiosity Trail designed for Savour Northland 2025, takes Kauri Museum visitors on a wholesome and sometimes humorous journey of food growing, harvesting and preparation through time. Receive a complimentary Trail Guide from the museum website or upon entry during the month of October and explore the museum’s 4500 square metres of award-winning exhibitions. Learn specifically about the weird and wonderful food related stories and collections. Be enlightened with how Māori, Dalmatian people and other New Zealanders developed their own tools, gadgets and favourite foods, unique to Northland’s landscapes, rivers and oceans. Highlights of the collection and Northland whanau – family recipes, are also available in the book Pioneering Life and the Kauri Tree, by the Kauri Museum and Sarah Charles. Exclusive to the museum store, this is a coffee table must. Exquisitely visual, and peppered with historic Northland images, it also serves as a memorable perpetual diary.

Make the journey fun, do the Northland Kai Curiosity Trail and extend it with a delicious stop at the nearby Gumdiggers Café.

Museum open daily 9am – 5pm, Café 10am – 3pm.
